In May 1976 – The story of a rock photographer will be published, a richly illustrated book about the life and work of Gijsbert Hanekroot. Written by Sidney Brandeis, the book contains over 200 photographs and profiles one of the most important pop photographers of the 1970s.

In the early 1970s, Hanekroot was the first Dutch photographer to focus entirely on rock music. As a photographer for the music magazine OOR, he worked at the heart of the international pop scene. The book centres on 1976, featuring iconic images of artists including David Bowie, ABBA, Patti Smith, Paul McCartney and Bob Marley.

In addition to the photography, the book provides a clear picture of how the music industry worked at the time and how Hanekroot’s photos found their way onto album covers for artists including The Rolling Stones and Neil Young. At the height of his career, he stopped working in the early 1980s, after which his archive remained unseen for years. It was only decades later that it was rediscovered and exhibited worldwide to great acclaim.

With 128 pages and over 200 photographs, 1976 – The story of a rock photographer is both a visual document of its time and a personal story.
